Student Learning Objectives
Week of March 2-6,2020
Students are continuing to analyze poems.
2nd & 3rd periods will read and share poems, along with their meanings.
Reading classes are also examining types of context clues in various sentences
(definition, synonym, antonym, & inference).
Week of February 2-6
Students are studying various aspects of poetry - figurative language, meanings,
structure and type.
Suffixes covered: able, ism, cide
Week of January 27-31
Students are reading non-fiction texts, analyzing author's purpose, text structure, and text features.
Suffixes covered: ology, ful, er.
Week of January 13-17
Students are looking at non-fiction passages, assessing the structure an author uses to organize the texts.
Students also need to know how the major sections of the passage, contribute to its whole and the development of ideas.
The prefixes we are focusing on this week are: anti, inter, and pro.
Week of January 6-10
Students are examining text features, which assists readers in understanding non-fiction texts.
They include: table of contents, glossary, index, caption, maps, tables, illustrations,
titles, bold, color, italics, subheadings, timeline, diagrams,and textbox.
Also, we are studying the following prefixes: dis, re, and un
Week of December 2-6
Students are continuing to read the class novel, Out Of my Mind.
Students will draft and publish their point of view narrative, based any other character from the book.
By the end of the week, each class will take an assessment based on the first-half of the novel.
Week of November 18-22
Students are continuing to read the class novel, Out Of My Mind.
Students will develop a 3-paragraph narrative, focusing on the point of view of a character, other than the main character.
Week of November 4-8, 2019
Students are starting the class novel, Out Of My Mind by Sharon Draper.
We will complete journal exercises, and learn about challenges that people face, both mentally and physically.
Week of October 28-November 1, 2019
Students will examine suspenseful stories this week. They will identify elements of suspense, sensory detail, and figurative language.
We will also work on analogies, determining the relationships between the pairs of words.
Week of October 14-18, 2019
This week, students are learning vocabulary for the Argumentative Unit.
They are also examining argumentative essays attempting to identify: claims, reasons, evidence, and counterclaims.
Week of September 30 - October 4, 2019
This week, students are completing their choice board assignment, which will count
as a summative grade for the first quarter. The choice board is from the class novel.
Students have a choice of researching any topic that they want to know more about from a result of their reading of A Long Walk to Water.
Week of September 16-20, 2019
Reading Classes will definitely finish the class novel this week.
On Friday, September 20, students will complete the novel summative.
The summative will include general questions from the book, as well as the character type words.
Students will also complete a character analysis writing assignment.
Week of September 9-13, 2019
7th graders are taking the ITBS this week. So there will be a modified class schedule this week.
We will continue studying character words, and try to finish the novel, A Long Walk to Water.
We will also begin our research using the choice boards for the book - students will work on a summative assignment.
Week of September 2-6, 2019
Students are continuing their class novel, A Long Walk to Water.
We are also continuing our study of "character" vocabulary.
Students will try to determine the difference between a static character and a dynamic character.
Students will complete both journal and comprehension activities that center around the class novel.
Students will begin to look at the novel choice board to prepare for the summative book assignment.
Week of August 26-August 30, 2019
1)Students are learning character vocabulary - see the words listed on the home page.
2)Students will continue reading our class novel - A Long Walk to Water.
They will complete journal activities, answer comprehension questions, and complete novel extension activities.
Week of August 19-August 23, 2019
1)Students will begin reading A Long Walk to Water, our class novel.
2)Students will examine plot elements in literature, and apply those elements to various classic tales.
